内容提要
This speech by a translator of renowned Chinese author Jia Pingwa offers insight into the discovery and translation of Jia's work, specifically the challenges involved in translating his late career masterwork, The Shaanxi Opera. The translator describes their experience moving from reading Jia Pingwa to attempting translations, and then finally securing the assignment to translate The Shaanxi Opera. The translator then goes on to discuss their collaboration with the author (formal interviews and informal talks) and trips to Shaanxi to conduct research, detailing the various problems encountered in the translation process, including local dialect, opera terminology, esoteric geographical terms, and the impressive mix of registers (libretti of opera, the refined chit-chat of intellectuals, and the vulgar language of the village). Finally, the speech offers an evaluation of the reception of the translated book in English. Through this speech, readers gain an understanding of the complex process of translating literature across languages and cultures, as well as the importance of collaboration between translator and author to achieve an accurate and compelling translation.
